Hampers help locals in need this Christmas

Year 9 students were instrumental in the organisation, promotion, and delivery of donations from St Ursula’s College to the St Vincent De Paul Society Yeppoon’s Christmas Hamper Appeal for 2021.

Head of Middle School at St Ursula’s College, Mrs Kelly Melvin, said all Year 9 students were involved in each step, in order to develop and encourage their leadership skills.

“The Christmas Appeal encouraged students to think of what they could do to help others this Christmas season, and how they could focus on giving rather than receiving,” Mrs Melvin said.

“This project linked beautifully to and reflected the College theme for the year ‘When compassion meets action, lives change’.”

St Ursula’s Year 9 students designated – within each of their Houses – the goods each class were to focus on.

“The girls interacted with the entire College community during the collection process,” Mrs Melvin said.

“Students spoke on assembly to promote the collection of goods, and they made up boxes to sort and arrange the donations for Vinnies.”

“It was wonderful to present the hundreds of items collected to Mrs Vicki McCosker from Vinnies Yeppoon at our Christmas Assembly; about 25 boxes filled with goods.”

Mrs McCosker told the Assembly the donations would provide help to local people in need, not just over the Christmas period, but well into 2022.

“This initiative is so important; we will continue to seek out ways to put compassion into action and change lives,” Mrs Melvin said.
